- Who are the people connected to the system?
- How do the people in the system interact with each other and with the parts of the system?
- How does a change in one element of the system affect the various parts and people connected to the system?

A simple model for defining learning spaces comes from the work of David Thornburg. He takes a four aspect approach to describing learning spaces. These are: the campfire, the watering hole, the cave and life, we add virtual space for contemporary learning. Thornburg notes that in a time of constant change, these four styles of learning have stayed similar since primordial times.
